Therapist on Set...

I have spent a lot of time on stages as a dancer.

I spent my share of time in front of and behind the camera for film productions.

I have had my thrill on fashion runways and also enjoyed some time as a figure and fashion model.

I have experienced scrutiny, stressful rehearsals, long days, shortcomings in auditions, bookings, and projects, and all the while I honor the Art within me and that is me.

But it was hard.

I did not, at those times, have the support of a therapist or coach on or off set. Yet I definitely could have benefited from one.

That led me to wonder how many other Creatives, Performers, and Artists felt the same way.

Licensed mental health therapists can provide services in the film and entertainment industry in various ways, including:

1. On-set Support: Therapists can be hired to provide on-set support and counseling services to cast and crew members during filming. They can offer confidential one-on-one sessions, group therapy, or crisis intervention as needed to address mental health issues, stress, or interpersonal conflicts that may arise during production.

2. Pre-Production Consultation: Therapists can offer consultation services to production companies and filmmakers during the pre-production phase. They can provide guidance on developing accurate and sensitive portrayals of mental health issues in scripts, characters, and storylines, as well as offer insight into potential psychological implications of certain scenes or themes.

3. Mental Health Awareness Workshops: Therapists can conduct workshops and training sessions for cast and crew members to raise awareness about mental health issues, promote self-care and stress management techniques, and provide education on how to support colleagues who may be struggling with mental health challenges.

4. Post-Production Support: Therapists can offer support to individuals who may be dealing with the emotional aftermath of filming intense or traumatic scenes. They can provide debriefing sessions, coping strategies, and referrals to additional mental health resources if needed.

5. Consultant for Character Development: Therapists can serve as consultants for actors and writers to help them develop authentic portrayals of characters dealing with mental health issues. They can offer insights into the psychological aspects of various conditions, behaviors, and emotional responses to ensure accurate and respectful representations on screen.

6. Crisis Response Planning: Therapists can assist production companies in developing crisis response protocols and procedures to address mental health emergencies or critical incidents that may occur on set. This can include creating support networks, establishing communication channels, and coordinating with local mental health resources.

7. Wellness Programs: Therapists can collaborate with production companies to implement wellness programs and initiatives aimed at promoting mental health and well-being among cast and crew members. This may include offering meditation sessions, yoga classes, mindfulness workshops, or other holistic approaches to self-care.

Overall, licensed mental health therapists play a crucial role in supporting the mental health and well-being of individuals working in the film and entertainment industry, helping to create safer and more supportive environments on and off set.
